Appreciation post: the 11 switchbacks on the Eagle Creek trail in Oregon finally made sense on mile 4
I counted every one of them last Saturday and realized the trail builders were routing around a washout that would've been way steeper. Anyone else notice the old rock work on that section, or am I imagining things?
That "routing around a washout" thing makes sense, I read a trail report a while back that said the CCC did a bunch of rock work on that stretch in the 30s. The old retaining walls are still there if you look downhill off the third or fourth switchback. You're not imagining it, that section has real history.
