Carried a GPS tracker on the JMT, totally changed my route planning

I used to rely on paper maps and gut feeling for the whole John Muir Trail, but last summer I brought a tiny GPS tracker and plotted my campsites ahead of time. Turns out my old approach had me adding an extra 4 miles a day on bad switchbacks. Has anyone else switched to digital route plotting and noticed a big difference?

Those switchbacks around Evolution Creek are brutal though... the GPS probably saved you some serious leg work. Just a heads up though, the trail actually changed a few reroutes in the last couple years, so old maps might not match what the tracker says now.

@terry_wood51, old maps matching the tracker sounds like a bigger plot twist than my switchback math.
