Debate: Should you plan every campsite or just wing it on long trails?
Did the JMT last month and had every site booked, but my buddy did the same trail a week later with no reservations and found spots fine. The ranger at Reds Meadow said half the permits cancel anyway, so are we overplanning or setting ourselves up for trouble?

Half the permits cancel? Man, that's wild to me. I mean I've heard of people no-showing but that number seems high. Honestly I'm more of a plan-everything guy just because I hate the stress of finding a spot after a long day of hiking. But your buddy getting spots fine with no reservations makes me think the system's a lot looser than people act like it is. I'd still probably book ahead though, because I'm not trying to roll into a full campground at 7pm after a 15 mile day and have to backtrack.

I'm such a mess I once forgot my tent poles, so strict planning probably saves me from myself.
