Finally stopped rolling my sleeping bag the same way my dad taught me

I was on Lost Coast Trail two summers ago and my buddy just stuffed his bag in a compression sack. He was packed up in 5 minutes while I was still fighting with mine for 20. Has anyone else ditched the military roll for just cramming it in?

Wait, you mean I've been wasting 20 minutes of my life every single trip for the last 15 years for nothing? Man, that hits close to home. My old man taught me the same military roll - you know, the one where you have to fold it into a perfect rectangle then roll it tight enough to choke a snake. Took me forever to realize the whole point of a sleeping bag is to be a big fluffy cocoon, not a precision art project. I switched to just cramming it in a compression sack a few years back and honestly, it's like a weight lifted off my shoulders. Plus, my bag still fluffs up the same at night, so who cares how it looks in the sack?

@henry_martinez you got me thinking, but I gotta say one thing - the military roll isn't completely useless. It does help if you're trying to save space in a really tight pack, like when you're backpacking with a tiny bag. But yeah, for car camping or most trips, stuffing it in a compression sack is totally fine and way faster. The real trick is just making sure you don't leave any air pockets so it compresses evenly, but even that's not a huge deal. Ever tried just shoving it in loose and using a dry bag as a makeshift compressor?

Totally changed my mind reading this too. I was always so hung up on the perfect military roll thinking it was the only way to save space. Then I went on a trip this summer with a buddy who just stuffed his bag in a regular ol' trash bag and it came out just as fluffy as mine after all that hassle. Now I just cram it in a compression sack and call it a day, it's so much faster and I don't care if it looks like a lump of garbage in my pack. Plus my bag still keeps me warm, so what's the big deal with a perfect fold anyway?
