Got caught in a surprise snowstorm on the John Muir Trail last October

I was near Evolution Lake and the weather turned fast, dropping about six inches in a few hours. It made me completely rethink my late-season gear list and how I check forecasts. What's your go-to move when a route throws a major weather curveball at you?

My only move was to set up camp right where I was and wait it out.

My bailout plan is a specific lower-elevation drainage.

Bet on specific drainages myself. They tend to hold snow longer and give you a slower, safer exit. Smart move if you know the terrain well enough.
