Just realized my route planning was all wrong after a comment at the trailhead
Last month on the Lost Coast Trail, another hiker saw my map and said 'You're doing it in 3 days? That's a 30 mile beach walk with heavy sand, you'll be wrecked.' I had planned 10 miles a day like my usual mountain hikes. I changed it to 4 days right there, adding a night at Randall Creek. It made the whole trip way more enjoyable, not a slog. Has anyone else had a similar reality check about daily mileage on a specific terrain?

Sand is brutal, it just steals your energy in a way nothing else does. I did a similar thing on the Ozark Trail last fall, planned 12 mile days but the sharp rocks slowed me way down. Had to reroute and add an extra day halfway through.

Yeah, deep snow is a whole other ball game. That stuff just saps your energy, makes a mile feel like five.
