PSA: Stop using those all-in-one GPS apps for backcountry routes

I keep seeing people on here relying on apps like AllTrails or Gaia for everything and it's driving me nuts. Last month I was on the Appalachian Trail near Hot Springs and ran into a guy who had zero paper backup because his phone died 3 miles in. These apps are great for planning but they lag out in deep woods or rain, and I've noticed the route data gets outdated fast. I've been hiking for 8 years and always carry a printed map and a compass, even on short day hikes. It's not about being old school, it's about not getting stuck when your battery hits 10% and you're off trail. How many of you actually practice using a compass before heading out? I swear half the people I meet in the Smokies can't read a topo map to save their life.

Or just actually learn how your phone works and download offline maps?
