Spent $340 on a zero degree sleeping bag for a Georgia section hike and it was overkill

Everyone on forums says buy the warmest bag you can afford, but I sweated through two nights on Blood Mountain in October and had to sleep with the thing unzipped anyway. My $90 20 degree bag would have been fine for anything south of the Smokies that time of year. What temp rating do you all actually use for fall trips down here?
