Swapped my 60 liter pack for a 38 last spring and I keep leaving stuff at home on purpose
For years I carried a 60 liter pack on every trip and filled it, even on two nighters, because empty space felt wrong. Last April on a trip through the Olympic National Park, I weighed my pack at a trailhead scale and it came in at 38 pounds. A ranger laughed and said most of what I had was fear, not gear. Now I run a 38 liter pack and leave the extra layers and the third water bottle at home. I still overpack my food though, so what is your actual cutoff for how many snacks is too many snacks?
