That dude on the JMT who told me to skip the bear canister was full of it
Met a self proclaimed expert at a Red's Meadow campstore who said just hang your food 15ft up and you'll be fine, so I left my canister at home. Day 3 near Thousand Island Lake I woke up to a fat black bear dragging my entire Ursack 50 yards through the brush. Anyone else ever trust bad advice from a random stranger on trail and regret it?

Wait you ditched the canister based on some random dude at a store? That sucks big time, I'm sorry. My buddy Matt did almost the same thing on the PCT near Kennedy Meadows, some guy told him a bear hang was all you needed. He woke up to a smart bear climbing a tree and snapping his line like it was nothing, lost his whole food bag with all his snacks and dinner. He had to hike 12 miles back to a store on empty and felt like a total idiot the whole way. Now he carries a canister no matter what anyone says, doesn't even listen to advice from rangers half the time lol. Hope your Ursack survived at least, those things ain't cheap.

Wait, you actually had a bear drag your Ursack? I used to think hanging was fine too until I watched a raccoon undo a PCT hang in like 20 seconds. That changed my mind real quick.
