Tried the Appalachian Trail approach vs. the PCT approach for water filtering. One broke down on me 3 days in.
Used a squeeze bag system on the AT last fall and it worked fine. Tried a gravity setup for a week in the Sierra this summer because everyone online raves about it. Day 3 the dirty bag sprang a leak at the seam. Had to drink straight from a stream near Bishop Pass. Went back to squeeze bags and never looked back. Anyone else have a filter system that just failed at the worst time?

Oh man, that's a risky move for sure lol. I've been hiking for years and there's a trick I always use - boil it for at least 5 minutes or use a good filter like a Sawyer or Katadyn. Giardia is no joke, had a buddy get it once from a crystal clear stream in the Rockies and he was sick for weeks. Not worth it even if the water looks clean, there's always something microscopic floating around in there.
