Vent: I was packing way too much food for my trips until a ranger in Yosemite asked if I was feeding a whole group.

I realized I was carrying almost 8 pounds of extra weight in snacks and meals, which made my pack a nightmare on steep climbs. Has anyone else had a moment that made you totally rethink your gear or food load?

My first solo trip I brought a full jar of peanut butter and a whole block of cheese. I was eating like I was at home, not on a trail. That ranger comment hits hard because it's so easy to pack your fears, especially with food. I started weighing every single snack bag and the numbers were shocking. Now my rule is one big meal a day and the rest are just bars and nuts, cuts the weight in half.

My buddy carried a full wheel of brie on a three day hike last summer. It was heavy but we ate like kings at camp. Sometimes the extra weight is worth it for a real meal, not just another bar. I'd rather be a little slower and actually enjoy my food out there.

It's like we've forgotten how to be a little uncomfortable for a real reward.
