DAE think covering for a coworker is a trap or a flex?
Last week at the diner on 5th, Marcus called out and I got stuck covering his whole grill station alone during a Friday dinner rush. I ended up staying 2 hours past my shift and the manager just said thanks and handed me a cold fry, no extra pay, no comp meal. But last month when Carla covered for me after my car died, I felt like I owed her big time and bought her drinks all weekend. So is covering for people a dumb move that just gets you used, or is it the one thing that keeps a kitchen crew from falling apart? Where do you all draw the line on saying no?
