Unpopular opinion: My boss at a pizza place in Reno told me to clock out and keep working, and I still can't decide if that was smart or just theft
Back in 2019 I worked at a small pizza shop in Reno and the owner pulled me aside after a rush one Friday. He said, word for word, "clock out, grab a rag, and finish the front, it's only 20 minutes." So I did it, three times that month, losing about $45 total. He treated it like a favor to the team and bought us beers sometimes, but my check still came up short. One side says he was skimming and I should've reported him to the labor board. The other side says it was a broke small business and I got free food out of it. Where do you draw the line between a shady boss and just a cheap one? I'm honestly not sure I'd do it different today.
Ugh, the "favors for the team" line gets me every time. I had a friend who worked at a coffee shop where the owner would bring in day old pastries for everyone and act like that made up for cutting their hours. Free food is not a paycheck, that's two different things.
