Appreciation post: The first time I watched Plan 9 from Outer Space with the right crowd
I spent years skipping Ed Wood movies because everyone said they were unwatchable garbage. Last month my buddy dragged me to a midnight showing at a tiny theater in Denver, and something clicked. The place was packed with people laughing at the cardboard gravestones and the wobbling sets, but not in a mean way. I finally got that these movies work because they're so sincere, like a kid showing you their crayon drawing and being proud of it. Has anyone else had a movie flip for them just by watching it with the right group?

Wait, your dad had Frank Sinatra records and you rolled your eyes at him?

The midnight show in Denver sounds like the exact right vibe for that movie, especially with the crowd getting into it. I've noticed this pattern with my dad's old vinyl records too, like he'd play them alone and I'd roll my eyes, but then at a house party someone put on Frank Sinatra and everyone was singing along, and it totally flipped for me. It's funny how context changes everything, like seeing a bad painting in a museum versus in your friend's garage where they're proud of it. Makes me wonder how many things I've written off just because I experienced them in the wrong setting, you know?
