Just realized I was defending Waterworld wrong this whole time

My buddy pointed out that I kept bringing up the budget when defending Waterworld, but he said the actual fun is in the stunt work and world building, so I rewatched it focusing just on the action sequences and now I finally get why people dig it - anyone else have a movie they defended for the wrong reasons and had to pivot?

You ever have one of those moments where you're defending something totally wrong and someone has to set you straight? I was the exact same way with The Rock. Kept talking about how it had a great cast and decent plot, but my buddy finally told me to shut up and just watch the car chase on the Golden Gate Bridge. Once I focused on the pure ridiculous stunts and the way they used San Francisco as a playground, I finally got why it's a classic. Now I just lead with "the action is insane" and skip the budget stuff entirely.

Nah, you're basically saying taste doesn't matter and all opinions are equally valid, which is just lazy.

Huh, I mean is it really that deep? Like you had to 'pivot' your whole defense strategy? It's just a movie with explosions and some guy on a jet ski. @elizabethtaylor I get what you're saying about The Rock but honestly who cares why someone likes it as long as they like it. People overthink this stuff way too much. Waterworld's fine. It's not a masterpiece. It's just a big dumb fun movie. Maybe just say "I liked it" and move on.
