My buddy Dave talked me into rewatching Son of the Mask

He said the CGI was actually ambitious for 2005 and to look past the jokes. I always hated that movie but watching it again, the visual effects team really went all out on those cartoon sequences. Has anyone else revisited a comedy flop and found something to respect in the technical work?

Look past the jokes" is exactly what I needed to hear honestly. I always wrote this movie off as a total cash grab but you're right, the cartoony CGI stuff is genuinely wild for 2005. I used to roll my eyes at it but now I see the work they put in.

2004's Polar Express already did the mo-cap thing way better though, and @elizabethg18 you gotta admit that movie holds up way more than this one. I rewatched this last week and the CGI faces are straight up nightmare fuel in a lot of scenes. The mouths don't sync right and the eyes have that dead doll look. People always hype the technology but forget how stiff the characters actually move compared to something like Shrek 2 from the same year. Is it really impressive work if the result looks so uncanny?

Wait, is that the one with the creepy train conductor?
