My sourdough's crust turned out just right

Lately, I see more bakers focusing on oven steam for crust. I used a water pan this time, and the loaf had a nice crackle.

Honestly all this oven steam talk feels like a lot. Sometimes I just toss ice cubes in the bottom of the oven and call it a day, bread still turns out fine. People get so deep into the tiny details.

Bread people can be so gatekeep-y about their methods. Like we get it, you own a spray bottle and a baking stone. Your ice cube trick probably works just as well for most home bakers anyway.

Wait, you just toss ice cubes directly into the bottom of the oven? Doesn't that make a huge mess with the water pooling and maybe even cracking something? The cleanup must be wild, I'd be too nervous about wrecking the heating element.
