Vent: Burned $150 on 'artisan' bread flour that was just repackaged regular stuff

I got all excited about this small-batch flour from a miller up in Vermont, paid like 10 bucks a bag plus shipping. After two months and maybe 15 loaves that came out flat and sticky, I got suspicious. I called the company and got a runaround, so I sent a sample to a buddy who works at a food science lab. He tested it and it was literally just all-purpose flour with a fancy label. I could have bought the same stuff at the grocery store for 2 bucks a bag. Has anyone else dealt with overpriced flour that didn't deliver?

Hold up, did you actually send a sample to a food science lab? I'm not trying to call you out, but that sounds like a lot of work for 15 lousy loaves of bread. I mean, you're a teacher, not a private investigator with a lab buddy on speed dial. Most of us would just suck it up and move on, but you went full detective mode. That said, your story makes me wonder if they really tested it or just looked at the protein content on a bag. A lot of cheaper "all-purpose" flour can have higher protein than the label says, especially if it's been repackaged, so the test might have been off. Either way, I get why you're mad - fake ingredients are frustrating no matter what.

My buddy sent kombucha to a lab once. Turned out to be mostly sugar water.
