Changed my mind about fictional settings after visiting a desert town in New Mexico

I used to think detailed world-building was overrated, but after spending a weekend in Truth or Consequences, the way the landscape shapes the character interactions in my book club's latest pick really clicked for me. Has anyone else had a location suddenly make a book make more sense?

Isn't this just standard human geography stuff though. A setting influencing characters isn't exactly some deep revelation.

My buddy @terrybennett once moved to Austin and started wearing cowboy boots unironically within a month.
