Dropped $85 on a used hardcover set for book club and it split our group in half
So about 4 months back our club picked a trilogy that was going for $85 used on eBay, and instead of doing library holds like normal, I just bought the whole set and passed it around. Huge mistake, because now half the group reads ahead and the other half is stuck on book one, so our meetings turned into people biting their tongues while the fast readers make faces. We had a meeting at my kitchen table where 3 people had already finished and one guy was only on chapter 6, and you could feel the awkwardness from across the room. Also the third book's spine cracked, and I am out the money plus the goodwill. I honestly think buying the set killed the whole thing, but some members say reading ahead helps them catch more details for the talk. Has anyone found a way to keep a group synced when everyone reads at different speeds, or is buying the whole set just asking for trouble?
Reading ahead doesn't actually help people catch more details, it just means they sit on their reactions longer and then dump them all at once. The real problem is the set gave everyone permission to sprint, and a shared book only works when the pace is shared too. Next time skip the bulk buy and just set a chapter cutoff for each meeting, because no amount of money fixes a group that isn't reading on the same schedule.
