I finally spoke up when our club tried to skip the whole last third of 'The Goldfinch'

Last month in Denver, the host said we should just 'discuss the themes' because the ending was 'too long'. Has your group ever just given up on finishing a book?

Oh my god, skipping the end is the whole point of a book club!

Remember my friend who read the last page of our book club pick first? She ruined the whole month for herself... spent every meeting trying to act surprised while we all talked about the build-up. The fun is in the shared confusion and theories, not just getting to the end.

My cousin did that with a mystery novel once. He knew who did it from page one and just sat there nodding while we all guessed wrong for weeks.
