I swore off audiobooks in book club for 3 years, then a 6 hour drive to Phoenix changed my whole take
For the longest time I was that person in our club who got actually annoyed when someone showed up talking about a book they had only listened to. I felt like listening was cheating, that you skip the whole point of sitting with the words on a page, and I said so more than once at meetings in our little library room on 5th. Then last month I had to drive out to Phoenix for my brother's wedding, 6 hours each way, and I grabbed a copy of the book we were reading on audio just so I wouldn't fall behind. About 90 minutes in I noticed I was catching stuff I always skim over when I read, like the way the author repeats the same line about the river to show the timeline looping back. When we met up, a woman named Dana quoted a passage that had made her pull over on the freeway, and I realized she had sat with it way harder than I had. So my whole hang up was less about the book and more about me wanting my way to be the real way. Now I do both, print for the parts I want to underline and audio for the re-read. Curious if your club has a rule about this or if it is just understood that listening counts.
