My book club buddy called me out for always picking the same genre

She said I've read 8 thrillers in a row and asked if I was scared of trying something slower. Honestly it made me rethink why I avoid literary fiction and now I'm wondering if anyone else has a genre they're secretly scared to branch into.

It sounds like she might have a point about avoiding slower books, but I don't think it's fear so much as just getting comfortable in what you know you'll enjoy. There's nothing wrong with sticking to thrillers if that's what keeps you turning pages.

Yes exactly, I think "getting comfortable in what you know you'll enjoy" is totally it! For me it's historical fiction, which I know sounds fancy but I'm honestly just scared of getting bored with slow descriptions of old timey stuff. I tried one once and it was like watching paint dry, so I went right back to my fast paced mysteries and never looked back. My friend called me out too and now I'm wondering if I'm missing something good, but man it's hard to break out of that comfort zone when you already know what works for you.
