My friend from the book club said we should stop picking 'safe' books
We were at our usual spot, the coffee shop on 5th Street, talking about next month's pick. I suggested another popular bestseller, something easy. My friend Jake looked at me and said, 'Why do we always do this? We're not here to just agree. We should pick a book that makes us fight a little.' He meant we should choose something with real tough ideas, not just a fun story. It hit different because he was right. Our talks have been pretty boring lately, just everyone saying they liked it. I always thought a good book club was about everyone having a nice time. Now I'm not so sure. Has your group ever picked a book that started a real argument?

Our club read "American Dirt" a few years back. It was the first time people actually raised their voices. We spent the whole meeting talking about who gets to tell which stories, and it was way better than just nodding along.

But sometimes a good story is just a good story.
