Our book club read a travel memoir before my trip to Japan, and now we're split.

I went to Kyoto after we discussed 'The Lady and the Monk'. Half the group thinks the book captures the place well, but I found parts felt off. How do you handle books where personal travel experience changes the debate?

That happens with any book or movie about a place. Reality never matches the polished version someone writes about.

Does that mean we should NEVER trust books about places, @charlescarter?

Actually, my friend read a book that made Bali sound like a quiet spiritual retreat, but when she went, the main temple was packed with crowds and selfie sticks. It just made her trust first-hand stories way more than any author's perfect version.
