Our group's fight over 'The Goldfinch' almost made us quit

Three years ago in our Denver book club, we picked Donna Tartt's 'The Goldfinch' for our October read. The meeting went for over two hours because half of us loved the detailed writing, while the other half called it a boring, overlong mess. My friend Lisa actually yelled 'I don't care about furniture restoration!' when we talked about the middle section. It got so heated we almost stopped meeting for good. How do you handle a book where the group splits right down the middle like that?

Maybe we should have voted to skip the furniture parts, I mean that section really does test your patience.

Nah, the furniture parts are the best part. It's like a puzzle, and you get to see it come together. That three hours Cameron spent? That's just building a story with your new couch. Skipping it would feel like cheating.

My couch assembly took three hours and two beers.
