Picked a hardcover over a Kindle for our last book club and the group went silent

Our group was split on whether to read 'The Overstory' on paper or screens, so I brought the hardcover just to prove a point. Nobody wanted to share it because of the weight and I ended up flipping pages by myself for 20 minutes. Has anyone else had a format debate totally kill the vibe at a meeting?

20 minutes of solo page flipping. That's a solid book club flex. Sounds like you brought a brick to a drinking party. Next time just pass around a single page and see who finishes first.

Ha ha yeah "brought a brick to a drinking party" is the perfect way to put it. I once showed up to a buddy's game night with a whole stack of graphic novels, totally misread the room.

But isn't there something to be said for actually enjoying the book instead of just showing up for the social part? If you're really into the story, twenty minutes of reading before the conversation starts seems pretty reasonable to me. Not everyone treats book club as just another excuse to drink.
