Pro tip: I used to pick book club books by just going with the loudest voice in the room
For years, our group in Austin would argue for 20 minutes and then pick whatever the most pushy person wanted. Last month, we started using a simple online poll with three options a week before the meeting. We read 'The Vanishing Half' last week because it quietly got the most votes, not the most shouts. Has anyone else found a better way to cut down on the arguing before you even start reading?

Honestly, I was the pushy one in my old group. I figured my picks were just the most fun, so why not? Seeing the poll results for our last book was a real eye-opener. A quiet historical fiction got picked over my loud suggestion, and everyone actually loved it. Maybe I need to talk less and listen to the numbers more.

Our group in Portland tried a poll but found three options was too few. We do five now, and it gives quieter members a real choice without the pressure.
