Rant: My book club told me to skip the prologue and I regret it

Last month, Sarah from our group swore up and down that prologues are always filler and to just start at chapter one. I followed her advice on this mystery novel set in Portland, and spent the first 40 pages totally lost on who the victim was and why anyone cared. Turns out the prologue had the single clue that explained the whole motive. Has anyone else ever gotten bad book advice that backfired this badly?

Told my buddy to skip the lore in a fantasy series and he never forgave me.

Did your buddy end up missing any major plot points, @gray6?

Oh boy, I once skipped a foreword and ended up wondering why medieval knights kept talking about their moms.
