Rant: Our book club fell apart over a 90 page memoir

Last month our group in Portland split right down the middle after picking a 90 page memoir about a fisherman's daughter. Half of us loved the sparse writing, the other half called it boring and wanted to quit early. We spent the whole meeting arguing about whether short books can carry deep themes, and three people left saying they'd never come back. Has anyone else had a club implode over book length or style, or was this just a bad pick on my part?
