Update: I stopped reading the book before club and started taking notes during, and our last meetup went 40 minutes long
Used to be the guy who finished the book two nights before club, underlined nothing, then sat there nodding while everyone else pulled quotes. That was me for almost two years. Then in March we did Beloved and I showed up with zero notes and got absolutely wrecked in the discussion, could not remember a single scene anyone brought up. So I changed it up. Now I read with a pencil and a stack of sticky notes, and I mark maybe 8 to 10 spots per book. I also write one dumb question on the last page like "why did she do that at the end" and bring it with me. Last meetup with 11 people, we ran 40 minutes past our usual stop time, and the host had to kick us out of the back room at the library. Turns out having actual pages to point at makes people argue way more. Anyone else switch to marking up their copy, or do you all just wing it?
