Warning: That $30 thrift store book deal nearly wrecked my club's debate night

I grabbed a first edition of a debated novel for thirty bucks from a yard sale in Portland last month. Turned out half the pages were missing in chapter 7, and we had to pause the whole discussion about the plot twist. Has anyone else gotten burned by a cheap used book find?

Oh man, that's rough! I started scanning through used books for missing pages right at the store after a similar experience with a mystery novel that skipped a whole chapter.

Wait, has anyone else had a friend get totally burned by a missing page situation? Laura_black31, my buddy Mark picked up a thriller from a thrift store last summer and got halfway through this intense chase scene only to find the next five pages were just ripped out, blank nothing. He spent like twenty minutes flipping through the rest of the book convinced he missed something, then just gave up and left it on a park bench. The worst part was he never found out if the guy in the ski mask got caught or not, drove him nuts for weeks.

I mean, I get being annoyed but scanning through every page at the store seems like a lot of work for a used book that probably cost five bucks. Missing pages stink but it's not like the book is ruined forever, you can just swap it out or get a refund if it's that bad. I've had books with typos and even a few missing bits here and there and honestly I just moved on with my life. Don't you think people stress way too much over minor stuff like this?
