Watched my book club almost break up over whether 'The Guest' was actually about class or just vibes

We meet at this coffee shop in Portland every month, and last time things got heated fast. Half the group swore the whole book was a metaphor for wealth inequality, and the other half said it was just a weird thriller with no deeper meaning. Our moderator had to step in after someone raised their voice about a hotel scene on page 47. I sat there thinking about how I handle disagreements in my tree crew where people argue about cut angles not themes. The argument lasted 45 minutes and we never even picked the next book. Has anyone else had to pause a debate to keep the group from splitting in two?

Tbh @brian_ramirez that review was about a different book, this one's actually called "The Guest" by Emma Cline.

That 45 minute debate sounds exhausting, I feel your pain.

That "page 47" detail cracked me up because I read a review that said the same debate was tearing apart book clubs in Brooklyn too. Sounds like you guys need a vibe check before the class analysis starts.
