When our discussion on 'The Goldfinch' stalled over Theo's reliability
We kept going in circles about whether Theo was a sympathetic narrator or just dishonest, and it was frustrating everyone. I got sidetracked reading Donna Tartt's older interviews where she hinted at crafting characters as products of trauma. Bringing that up shifted our focus to how the plot mirrors his psychological state, which totally refreshed the debate. Has anyone else used author interviews to break a deadlock in their club talks?

I love your text-based debates, and our club did that with 'The Secret History' too!

Author interviews can color the reading too much, ngl. Our group prefers to debate based solely on the text. Otherwise, it becomes about Tartt's mind, not Theo's story.

Honestly, author interviews can give context that the text doesn't spell out. The_betty might see it as coloring the reading, but ngl, it helped our club see Theo's trauma as intentional. Sometimes you need that outside lens to get unstuck.
