Why does nobody talk about the book club debates at the Strand in NYC
I popped into the Strand last Saturday for their used book sale and ended up overhearing two strangers argue for 20 minutes about whether a character's choice in 'Pachinko' was selfish or loyal, and it made me wonder if public spaces beat formal book club meetings for real debate.

Formal book clubs force you to actually finish the book, so the debate is about the whole story. Random people at a used book sale are probably arguing about stuff they skimmed or half remember, which is not the same thing at all. Plus, strangers have zero stakes, so they'll just walk away mid-argument without ever changing their minds.
