Why I stopped trusting bestseller lists after hitting 25 books in one year

My book club set a goal to read 25 books last year. I hit that number by June and felt great until I realized I couldn't remember half of what I read. I was just rushing through to check a box. Now I aim for 15 books max and actually take time to discuss them with the group. Has anyone else felt like the number game ruins the enjoyment?

My book club hit 30 books one year and I felt the same way. I started picking 2-3 books per quarter that actually interest me rather than trying to read everything on the bestseller list. Now I keep a journal where I jot down one thing I liked or hated about each book before moving on. It forces me to actually process what I read instead of just flipping pages. The number game definitely kills the joy if you're just chasing a goal. Slowing down helped me remember stories way better and made reading fun again.

Ngl the book club thing makes a huge difference. Just reading for quantity turns it into a chore instead of something you actually enjoy. Slowing down and talking about what you read is way more satisfying than hitting some random number.

Did a friend of yours quit a book club because they were reading TOO fast?
