A librarian in Akron asked me to leave my phone at the desk, so I did and stayed 4 hours
I always thought I had to have my phone within reach or I would miss something. She just pointed at a little wooden box by the door and I dropped it in, then read a whole book in one sitting. Now I do it every Sunday. Anyone else got a spot that forces you to unplug?
Waited a second before I replied because I had to double check something. What you're describing is mostly true but it's not really the phone that unplugs you, it's the fact that the librarian asked you personally and you said yes. I tried the same trick at home, put my phone in a drawer, and it did nothing for me because I knew I could just open the drawer. It's the being in a public place where somebody knows you left it that makes it stick. So the wooden box is doing less work than you think, it's the social thing. Not trying to be a jerk about it, I just noticed this myself.
