Got told my lawn mowing pattern was 'wrong' by a retired landscaper, actually changed how I do it

Last summer my neighbor Bob, who used to run a landscaping crew for 30 years, walked over while I was finishing up my yard. He said, 'You're going in the same direction every time, that's how you get those ruts and uneven spots.' I'd been mowing in straight rows north to south for like 5 years without thinking about it. Now I switch directions every other week, and after 2 months the grass really does look more even with less bare patches. Has anyone else had some random stranger give them yard work advice that actually worked?

Also helps prevent the grass from learning and leaning one way over time.

My buddy Matt had a retired golf course guy tell him he was cutting his grass too short. He was doing it at like 2 inches because he liked the clean look. The guy said to bump it up to 3.5 inches so the roots go deeper and the weeds don't take over. Matt didn't believe him at first but tried it for a month and his lawn stayed greener through July than it ever had before.

Happens with so many things where less isn't always more.
