I finally asked a stranger why they were taking a picture of my house

Last Tuesday, I saw a woman with a phone pointed at my front yard from the sidewalk, so I walked out and just asked her what she was doing. She explained she was documenting architectural details for a history project, which was fine, but it felt weird to break the 'don't engage with strangers' rule. Does anyone else think we should just ask more direct questions instead of silently wondering?

Assume everyone is just weird until you ask, like @cameronmurray said. Most reasons are boring, so why waste energy being suspicious? You just end up feeling silly for worrying about a history project.

Totally agree about the boring reasons. I once asked a neighbor about a weird tapping sound and it was just his ceiling fan chain hitting the lamp. Felt so dumb for thinking it was a secret code. That's the kind of thing @knight.mason means, we make up stories when the truth is just normal life being odd.

Ever wonder how many weird situations we could clear up if we just talked to each other? I'm trying to get better at asking stuff like you did, because sitting inside feeling paranoid is way worse than a 30 second chat. Sure, sometimes people are just weird, but most of the time there's a boring reason. What's the strangest but harmless explanation you've ever gotten from just asking?
