Just realized I was washing my cast iron skillet all wrong for 3 years

Tbh I kept scrubbing my cast iron with soap and a rough sponge like it was a regular pan. My buddy who cooks at a diner saw me doing it and laughed. He said all I need is hot water and a stiff brush, no soap unless it's super nasty. I tried it for 2 weeks and now the seasoning is actually building up right. Why did no one tell me this sooner? Has anyone else been doing it the wrong way this whole time?

Hot water only misses the mark sometimes. A tiny bit of Dawn when needed won't ruin your seasoning if you rinse good and dry it right away.

Tried just hot water for a while and it worked fine most of the time, but greasy messes always needed a little soap. A drop of Dawn and a quick rinse, then straight to a low flame to dry off. My skillet's still going strong after years of that routine.

Stop using any soap at all. I switched to just a dry scrub with coarse salt and a paper towel after cooking, then rinse with hot water. No soap, no brush, no sponge. Been doing it for a year and my skillet is like nonstick glass. Soap strips the seasoning slowly over time even if you think you're rinsing it all off. Ellis and everyone else using Dawn is just masking a slow problem.
