My neighbor sold his truck last week and it got me thinking about car ownership

I've always been a guy who drives a pickup, you know, just in case I need to haul something. But my neighbor Steve, he's 68 and sold his F-150 for a little Honda Civic. I asked him why. He said he realized he used the truck bed maybe three times in the last two years but paid $200 a month more in gas and insurance. That hit me because I looked back at my own records. I've hauled exactly one load of mulch and a broken lawnmower in the past 18 months. Now I'm wondering if I'm just keeping the truck out of habit and if that's a social norm I should break. Anyone else downsized a vehicle and regretted it or been glad they did?

Steve's story hits pretty close to home for me, I've been wrestling with the same thing watching my own truck sit there. It's wild how much we stick with a vehicle just because we think it's part of our identity. Good on Steve for making the switch, sounds like he figured out what actually made sense for his life.

Hell yeah, that truck identity thing is real. I get it, there's something about having that bed back there that makes you feel ready for anything. But here's what I'm curious about: when you bought that truck brand new or used, did you actually sit down and run the numbers on what the extra cost would be for the few times you'd need to haul? Or was it more of a gut decision, like "this is just what a guy drives"?
