Rented a U-Haul for a 10 mile move and it cost me 300 bucks for one afternoon

So I tried to dodge the whole "asking friends for help" thing because I hate feeling like a burden. Rented the smallest U-Haul in Madison last Saturday for a studio move. Drove maybe 15 minutes total. Somehow with mileage, fees, and the dang dolly rental it came to 289 dollars. My buddy who moved across town last year said he used a local guy with a pickup for 80 bucks cash and they hauled everything in two trips. I couldve paid someone 100 bucks to do it all for me and still saved money. Has anyone else overpaid just to avoid awkward social favors? How do you even find those random pickup haulers without getting scammed?

The U-Haul price sucks but honestly there's something to be said for knowing the truck is gonna be there when you need it. Those pickup guys can flake on you last minute or show up with a truck that smells like old fish and has a dented tailgate. Paying extra for reliability is just buying peace of mind, even if it stings the wallet.
