Stopped for coffee in Boise and saw a guy just reading a book at the counter
I mean, he wasn't ordering anything, just chilling with his novel for like 20 minutes. It was kind of nice to see someone not feeling pressured to buy something to exist in a space. Has anyone else noticed places where the unspoken 'you must be a customer' rule is starting to fade?

Honestly, I miss when malls had those big food court seating areas you could just camp in. Now it feels like every chair is bolted to a table with a purchase receipt. That guy in Boise found a rare spot.

The "camp in" phrase hit me right in the nostalgia. I used to spend whole afternoons at the food court with a single soda and a book, nobody cared. @verar21 has the right idea with the bench near the entrance but those are always taken when I get there. My luck I'd sit down and immediately spill my coffee on myself while trying to read a menu from thirty feet away. It's like malls decided we're all potential loiterers now, which I guess is fair since I definitely was one. The Boise guy probably had to sacrifice something to find that spot, maybe his dignity or a functioning knee like mine.

Yeah, the bolted chairs thing is real. I just bring a coffee and sit on one of those benches near the entrance now.
