Unpopular opinion: the "just be yourself" advice I got in high school was actually terrible
My guidance counselor told me to just be myself at job interviews, but I came off as awkward and nervous and didn't get four straight callbacks. After I started pretending to be confident and rehearsing answers like a script, I landed the next two jobs. Has anyone else found that faking it beats being real in these situations?

I heard somewhere that interviews are basically acting, and that "being yourself" is just terrible advice for nervous teenagers.

Is it weird that the whole "just be yourself" thing only works if your natural self happens to be the kind of person who's good at interviews? Like, if you're shy or awkward, you're basically being told to fail.
