I thought giving blunt feedback online was just being a jerk until I saw the same 4 people thank me
I went back through my old replies on a resume post last month and 4 strangers quoted my harsh comment saying it was the only one that actually helped. Now I'm wondering if I've been softening my feedback for no reason, where do you draw the line between honest and mean?
Yes! This is exactly it. The thing people miss is that being blunt is not the same as being cold. You can say "this resume section is weak and here is why" and still be on that person's side. What makes feedback mean is not the harshness, it's whether you actually care about the person getting better. I've noticed the comments that land are the ones that give a real fix, not just a verdict. Saying "this is bad" with nothing else is lazy, saying "this is bad because of X, try Y instead" is a gift. The 4 people who thanked you probably felt that you took the time to be specific. Softening things just to be nice usually leaves people with no idea what to do next.
