Just realized my buddy's "stay positive" act after he got laid off from the plant in Gary is the most dishonest thing I have seen
Everyone keeps telling him he will land on his feet and that everything happens for a reason, but he has applied to 63 jobs since March and got 2 callbacks. I told him straight up that the market is rough and he might need to take something at $18 an hour for a while, and he got quiet on me. People act like saying the hard thing is mean, but what is meaner, lying to his face or letting him burn through his savings? Has anyone here actually told a friend the truth like that and had it go okay?
You ever notice how the people saying "everything happens for a reason" are never the ones going through it? I read something a while back about how the "just stay positive" stuff actually backfires, because it makes the person feel like they can't admit things are bad without letting everyone down. There was this piece about layoffs in the rust belt and a guy said the fake cheer from friends made him feel more alone than the rejection emails did. Saying the hard thing is not mean, it is respect. He needs someone who will sit in the suck with him, not hand him a bumper sticker.
