Overheard my neighbor's roof leak at 3am last Tuesday and ended up on his porch with a bucket

I was up late gaming when I heard this steady drip sound coming through the wall. Ran outside and found my neighbor's gutter was pouring water right into his basement window well. I banged on his door and we spent 45 minutes shoveling mud and setting up a tarp before the rain stopped. Has anyone else had to play hero in the middle of the night for a stranger?

Three years ago my neighbor’s sump pump died during a freak May storm. I heard water gushing at like 2am and thought someone was hosing down my fence. Found him trying to bail out his basement with a bucket while his wife held a flashlight. He didn’t have a backup pump or even a wet vac. I ran home and grabbed my shop vac and we took turns emptying the window wells for an hour. The thing nobody talks about is how owning basic tools makes you the neighborhood night shift. I’ve now got a spare sump pump and a generator sitting in my garage because that night scared me too. You never know when you’ll be the only person within a mile who owns a good shovel or a submersible pump.
