Update: My flip on blunt honesty with friends
Always said be real no matter what. Watched a friendship crack because of it. I hold back unless asked directly.

Caught a podcast episode that talked about how truth needs a soft touch to actually land. Isn't it wild how we forget the person on the other end? Like, what's the point if it just pushes people away?

Man, I heard a podcast say honesty without kindness is just cruelty.

I remember a chapter in Brené Brown's book about how truth telling has to come with care. She said that being blunt often hurts more than it helps (which makes sense, right?). It's like, if you're just honest to get something off your chest, you're not really helping the other person. That podcast quote hits home because I've been on the receiving end of that kind of cruelty. It left me feeling small, not motivated to change. So now I always try to wrap hard truths in a little kindness, even if it takes extra time.
