I finally got my old laptop to run a design program, but it took a full weekend

I needed to run a newer version of GIMP on my 8-year-old laptop to finish a project. First, I spent a whole day trying to update the drivers, which kept failing. Then I found a forum post from 2020 about a specific workaround for my graphics card, and that took another day to get right. In total, it was about 16 hours of troubleshooting just to avoid buying a new machine. Has anyone else had a project get derailed by trying to make old tech work?
